Groups
Discussion In A Safe And Confidential Setting.
Therapy groups are led by one or two therapists from Student Counseling Services, and are typically attended by 10 students or less. Group sessions last approximately one hour.
Each of these groups run semesterly, but days and times are subject to change. If you're interested, or if you would like to refer someone, please contact the group facilitator listed below.
This is a support group for students who have a parent (or two) who is impaired with a mental illness, personality disorder, or addiction. They may be undiagnosed, you may just be guessing. Have you felt something is “off” or different about a parent that makes your relationship difficult to navigate? Do you notice peers have very different interactions and experiences with their parent and is makes it hard for them to relate to your experience? Do you find yourself not talking about your parent and the relationship because it’s been alienating, people see it as “weird” or you feel disloyal talking about it? Has your parent or experiences with them ever been embarrassing or scary in a way that peers would not understand? Do you ever dread contact or extended visits home, or wonder if you should limit or cut off contact with a parent? Then come meet in a safe and confidential place with a group of students – undergrad and graduate – who can relate and who need your support too.
Please contact Kitty Brougham, MS, LMHP if interested.
The Survivors’ Circle is designed for survivors of sexual assault to receive support from peers with similar experiences in a private and confidential setting. The group allows an opportunity for survivors to discuss difficult topics with peers who can understand the struggles associated with a person’s sexual assault and hopefully help reduce loneliness and isolation. This group will also focus on how to develop safe and healthy relationships going forward. The group is private and confidential and interested members will have a conversation with a facilitator before deciding whether or not to participate.
Please contact Becky Tompkins, PsyD and Sarika Griffin, MSW if interested.
Grief Group is attended by a mix of graduate and undergraduate students who are dealing with grief. Grief experiences, especially at this time in life when most peers haven’t experienced anything similar, can be an isolating, confusing, and overwhelming. This group provides a safe place for you all to come together to talk, to give and receive support, and to be with others who share similar experiences. Some students’ losses are recent, while others are from the more distant past. Often, the death is of someone in the family, such as a caretaker, parent, or sibling. In the past, students have described this time together as a helpful way to address, process, and share grief. Plus, Cocoa, our therapy Labrador, will be in attendance!
Please contact Mike Kelley, PhD if interested.
Spectrum is designed as a confidential, safe place for sexuality and gender acceptance. This is a therapy group for individuals who are interested in discussing and processing issues related to sexual and gender identity in an affirming space. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: relationships, family, identity, religion, and mental health concerns. Anyone in the LGBTQIA+ community is welcome, from students who are questioning their identities to students who have experienced discrimination based on their identities. We will meet on a weekly basis to talk, connect, offer support, and discuss issues of personal relevance in an affirming environment.
