Tuition Exchange Program

Tuition Exchange Program

Chartered in 1954, started with the support of TIAA/CREF and launched with funding from the Ford Foundation for the Advancement of Higher Education, the Tuition Exchange program is the oldest and largest program of its kind in the U.S. - some 600+ members strong. Tuition Exchange is a tuition remission program for children of current full-time faculty, administrators, and staff. Through the program, a dependent child of an eligible employee at one participating institution may be awarded Tuition Exchange at another. See the Tuition Exchange website at www.tuitionexchange.org for complete information and to view list of participating schools.

Eligibility

It is important to realize that Tuition Exchange awards tend to be extremely limited in number, and highly competitive. As a result, there are no guarantees to employees that they will be able to utilize the Tuition Exchange benefit at the institution of their choice.

Eligibility requirements are determined by each institution. Employees should refer to their faculty or staff handbooks to learn if this is a benefit for which they are eligible. Because each institution sets their own rules about how students are selected to receive a Tuition Exchange award, it is the parent's responsibility to research what is required and follow any applicable deadlines/policies. Many schools use academic achievement as a determining factor, and will only consider incoming first-year applicants.

At Creighton University, an employee must meet the 100% tuition remission level for his/her child to be eligible to apply for Tuition Exchange. (Contact Human Resources for complete criteria and information.) In the event more Creighton employees apply for the program than can be accommodated, the length of employment at the University and participation of previous  family members in the tuition exchange programs will be the primary factors used to select for the awards.

Benefits

When awarded, most Tuition Exchange covers tuition only. However, at some schools it does not cover full tuition and at other institutions it may cover additional expenses, such as room or board. At Creighton University, Tuition Exchange is awarded for full tuition only.

Any expenses not covered by Tuition Exchange (i.e., fees, room, board, travel related expenses, or books) are the sole responsibility of the student and/or the student's family. Tuition Exchange may be awarded for eight full-time semesters (fall and spring), or until the bachelor's degree is completed, whichever comes first.

Availability

Every participating institution determines the number of outgoing students it can certify as well as how many Tuition Exchange awards it will grant to incoming students each year. As a general rule, these positions are extremely limited in number, hence highly competitive in terms of both space and selectivity. As stated above, there are no guarantees to the children of any given faculty or staff member that they will be able to utilize the Tuition Exchange benefit at the institution of their choice. For more information on the number of Tuition Exchange Scholarships available at a particular institution, contact the institution's Tuition Exchange Liaison.

Application Process for Eligible Employees of Creighton University

  1. By December 1, Creighton University employee submits the online Tuition Exchange application. A communication will be sent when applications are ready for submission. This application is a Creighton internal application, notifying Human Resources that you are intending to pursue the Tuition Exchange program for the upcoming school year. Only one application is needed for both FACHEX and Tuition Exchange Program.
  2. Your next step in this process is to go to the external Tuition Exchange site to select the desired schools for Tuition Exchange. Please log onto Tuition Exchange - The TE EZ-Application to select your desired schools and to complete the three step process. To check the status of your application throughout the three step process, please log onto Tuition Exchange - The TE EZ-Application, using the last four digits of your student’s TE-ID number.
  3. After the parent's eligibility is confirmed, all applicants for Tuition Exchange will be reviewed and selected for certification, based on years of service and previous use of benefit. Certification of Tuition Exchange eligibility for the selected students is sent to the Tuition Exchange Liaison of the college(s) the student is interested in. Certification only means the student is eligible for a Tuition Exchange award; it is not a guarantee of an award.
  4. The student must apply to the college(s) in which he/she is interested, following each institution's application procedures and deadlines. (It is recommended that the student or parent contact the Admissions Office or Tuition Exchange Liaison at the desired school(s) to see about any special admissions dates that need to be followed. It is not uncommon for institutions to encourage Tuition Exchange applicants to apply for Early Action, so it is the responsibility of the student/parent to find out this information, and follow those admission guidelines.)
  5. After admission decisions have been made, the admissions office or Tuition Exchange Liaison at the other institution(s) informs the student whether or not he/she will be offered a Tuition Exchange award. Please be aware that decisions by each participating institution are done on their own time frame. However, most schools wait until after March 1 to award Tuition Exchange.
  6. To continue in the Tuition Exchange program, the employee must remain actively employed at Creighton in order to be re-certified to the participating institution. Every year the student is in the Tuition Exchange program, the employee must request to be re-certified by completing the online Tuition Exchange Application for Renewal.

Application Process for Employees of Participating Institutions With Children Applying to Creighton University

  1. Employees at participating universities will follow the deadline and application procedures set by the Tuition Exchange Liaison at their home institutions.
  2. After the Liaison at the home institution confirms the parent's eligibility, she/he will certify the student's eligibility to the Tuition Exchange Liaison at Creighton University.
  3. Beginning August 1, but no later than the Priority Scholarship Deadline (see Admissions for specific date), the student  completes an application to Creighton University. Tuition Exchange is typically only given to incoming first-year students.
  4. The first round of Tuition Exchange awards will be made by February 1. The Creighton Admissions Office will inform eligible admitted students if they have been offered a Tuition Exchange award. Eligible admitted students who do not receive an award will be placed on a wait list.  Students on the wait list will be notified if a tuition exchange award becomes available for them.
  5. Students who accept our Tuition Exchange award will be charged an administrative fee of $1,250 per semester.  Students awarded Tuition Exchange must maintain at least a 2.3 grade point average at Creighton University and their parent must continue to be eligible for this benefit at the participating institution.
