FAQs

What is CreightonAlert?™

CreightonAlert™ is powered by Everbridge, a best-in-class emergency alert system used by leading higher education institutions, government agencies and corporations. Everbridge technology enables Creighton administration to communicate with the community instantly, via a variety of contact methods such as email, SMS (text messaging) and cell phone. Whether students are in a classroom, eating in the Student Center, or somewhere in transit, Everbridge technology will find them and deliver the message. CUAlert enables the University to keep everyone informed before, during, and after serious emergency events.

How does CreightonAlert™ work?

If an emergency situation has been confirmed, Public Safety will send a CreightonAlert™ message. The CreightonAlert™ system will send a message to your first contact method, wait one minute for confirmation, and then try your second contact method. When all methods have been tried, and no confirmation has been received, the system will wait one minute and start the cycle over again. The system will attempt to contact you for three full cycles, up to one hour, or until a confirmation is received; which ever happens first.

The CreightonAlert™ system will attempt to contact you in this order:

  1. Cell Phone Text
  2. Cell Phone Call
  3. Campus Email
  4. Alternate SMS
  5. Personal Email
  6. Alternate Email
  7. Office Phone
  8. Home Phone
  9. Alternate Phone
How much does it cost to participate in CreightonAlert™?

CreightonAlert™ is a free service to the Creighton community.

I am an active student, faculty, or staff, do I need to enroll to receive an alert?

No, but it is strongly recommended that you register. Creighton email addresses are loaded as your default method of contact in the event of an emergency. You can add additional contact methods in which you will receive the alert message. Log in to www.creighton.edu/cualert to add additional contact methods.

Creighton will ensure new students, faculty and staff are added to the alert list each night as they become active members of the campus community.

How do I unsubscribe from CreightonAlert™?

You cannot. All active faculty, staff, and students will always receive emergency communications via email at a minimum. If you choose to receive notifications via additional modes of communication you may do so by adding other contact information in the CreightonAlert™ website (www.creighton.edu/cualert) or remove these additional modes of communication at any time.

What phone number will I see on my Caller ID when I receive a CreightonAlert™ cell or landline call?

CreightonAlert™ cell phone and landline phone calls will come from 402-280-2855. It is recommended that you program a unique and audible ring tone for calls coming from this number, especially if you normally have your cell phone on vibrate mode during class or while in a meeting. Visit your cellular provider's website for instructions on programming a special ringtone for a particular number.

When would I receive a CreightonAlert™ message?

CreightonAlert™ will only be used for emergencies to the direct safety and well-being of the Creighton community.

  • Criminal Activity – Immediate danger to the community (Active Shooter, Armed Robbery).
  • Severe Weather Conditions – Weather delays and closings, Tornado Warnings.
  • Life Safety Conditions – Chemical hazard, Explosion, significant Fire, Water/Sewage, Power outages.
  • Testing - To be conducted semi-annually. The system will NOT be used for campus activities, or general announcements.
How often will the system be tested?

The University intends to perform tests of the CreightonAlert™ system once in the Fall semester and once in the Spring semester. Email notification will be sent prior to all tests so you will/should be aware of all tests before they occur. All test messages will clearly state "this is a test".

Should I add my family member or significant other to my contact information in CreightonAlert™?

It is not recommended that you add a family member’s phone number or email address to your record. CreightonAlert™ cycles through your phone numbers and email addresses in order. If you were unable or unavailable to confirm receipt of the notification, the system tries to reach you on your family’s contact information. If that person confirms receipt of the notification that was primarily intended for you, you will be unaware of the emergency situation.

I heard that my classmate received a voice message from CreightonAlert™ but I did not. Why?

It is possible that we do not have your contact information loaded in the CreightonAlert™ service, or it may be inaccurate.  Please log into the CreightonAlert™ website (http://www.creighton.edu/cualert/) to verify your information.

I heard that my classmate received a SMS (text) message on the cell phone from CreightonAlert™ but I did not. Why?

To receive text messages, you will need to provide a text capable device phone number on the CreightonAlert™ website in the SMS entry.

Are alerts only sent to my contact information?

No, CreightonAlert™ messages will also be displayed on all Creighton digital signage screens across campus.

As a distance student, will I get all campus alerts?

No, as a distance student you will not receive alerts for situations that only impact the Omaha campus. If you wish to receive ALL alert messages you can log into CreightonAlert™ at www.creighton.edu/cualert and de-select the distance student indicator. You can re-select the distance student indicator at any time. Non-distance students do not have the option to opt out of any messages.

If I add my cell number to this system will it be available to others on campus for non-emergency uses?

No, information added to CreightonAlert™ is not available to anyone or any process. Your information will only be used within the CreightonAlert™ system to notify you of emergency situations on or near campus.

What do I do in the event of a serious emergency?

The University urges all faculty, staff, and students to use their best judgment in reporting an emergency. The college liaisons work with a variety of public and private agencies to supplement our emergency response needs. When crimes, dangerous situations, or other unusual events occur, the University is committed to disseminating timely and accurate information to the community.

Stay calm and make reasonable efforts to protect yourself and others. Stay in place unless otherwise instructed. Leave the building immediately if you hear an alarm, if requested by emergency response personnel, or if the building seems unsafe.

Do I need to install an app on my smartphone to receive alerts?

No. Alerts to your cell phone or smart phone, will arrive as you prefer, as either phone call, or a text message.

What do I do when I receive an alert?

Listen carefully, follow the instructions, and remain calm.

Will my contact information remain secure?

The information collected for CreightonAlert™ will be maintained internally and will not be shared.
