A Season to Remember for Bluejay Athletics

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

What a season.

Bluejay nation truly soared this weekend as our men’s basketball team returned to the Elite Eight for the first time in modern NCAA history. I want to congratulate the Bluejay student-athletes, coaches, and staff for a tremendous series of games that will undoubtedly be remembered in the annals of Creighton University athletics history.

I also want to thank our broader Creighton community. Throughout the entire men's and women's basketball seasons, whether it was celebrating Selection Sunday, the men's team advancing to the Sweet 16, or just being together in the final months of the regular season with tremendous crowds at both D.J. Sokol Arena and the CHI Health Center Omaha, the world’s eyes were turned to Creighton. As representatives of our University, you showed the dedication, passion, and spirit that shows what it means to be a Bluejay.

I want to thank both of our Elite Eight head coaches, Greg McDermott and Jim Flanery, for their leadership and mentorship of our student-athletes each season. With both men’s and women's seasons now over, the knowledge gained, and experiences earned, will bear fruit for years to come.

To all of those who have cheered on our Bluejays this year, no matter the sport, I hope that you will continue your support and engagement in the coming months as our spring sports are now fully underway as well. The experience of collegiate athletics at Creighton is not measured in wins and losses; it is in the community that we build along the way.

I would be remiss if I did not recognize our many colleagues in Athletics; University Relations; University Communications and Marketing; and other departments who work behind the scenes to plan and host large-scale events and activities around tournament games. They do so alongside getting our student-athletes, staff, and so many others from one city to the next and serving the needs and interests of our loyal alumni and fans.

In this 10th anniversary of our membership in the BIG EAST, this was an historic year for our men's basketball team, and it was so exciting seeing them represent Creighton so admirably on the national stage. Let us continue to show that support for Creighton’s mission. We are Bluejays. Always.

Sincerely,
Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ, PhD
