Dear Students and Colleagues,
I wish to share the sad news that a former and longtime member of Creighton’s Jesuit community has passed away. The Rev. Thomas Schloemer, SJ, died on Tuesday, June 18, at the St. Camillus Jesuit Community in Wisconsin at the age of 88.
Fr. Schloemer ministered at Creighton for 12 years, including serving as an assistant to former president Michael G. Morrison, SJ, for many years as well as a student advisor in Kiewit Hall from 1997 to 2004.
Known for his ability to learn and remember the names of everyone he would encounter, he spent may hours counseling students, a number of whom he stayed in touch with after they graduated. He also served as president of Creighton Prep for a year in 1971 and as an associate pastor for St. John’s Parish as well as several other parishes in Nebraska, Minnesota, and Wisconsin throughout the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s.
Fr. Schloemer entered the Society of Jesus in 1955 and was ordained in 1968. In addition to Creighton, his ministry took him to Marquette University and Marquette University High School. Following his time at Creighton, he would become associate pastor of the Church of the Gesu in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and then would minister to priests of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee for another two years before being missioned to St. Camillus.
I know so many of our alumni, staff, and faculty who had the opportunity to know Fr. Schloemer during his time at Creighton will carry his memory with them and embrace the kindness he sought to share with others. Please join me in offering prayers and condolences to his family, Jesuit brothers, and all who knew and cared for Fr. Schloemer as they grieve this loss.
Sincerely,
Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ, PhD
President, Creighton University
