The History Department will host a lecture, "I Must Write a Bit about Pop: Down Syndrome, Life Writing, and Representation," presented by Dr. Emer Lucey of Arizona State University, on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 3:30 p.m. in Hixson-Lied, G04.
In 1967, British 20-year-old Nigel Hunt published his first book, The World of Nigel Hunt. A reflection on his family, travels and pop music, the book was notable because Hunt had Down syndrome, and its publication defied the belief in the ineducability of people with Down syndrome.
This talk explores early writings by authors with Down syndrome as they collaborated with, chafed against and challenged parents, educators and physicians in representing and advocating for disability. For more, contact Andy Hogan, Fr. Henry W. Casper, SJ Professor in History.
