Clinical reasoning is an essential element for all clinicians in meeting the complex healthcare needs of society, and clinical educators play a critical role in fostering sound clinical reasoning abilities and optimizing excellence in educational outcomes.
Heather Knight, DPT, Julie Peterson, DPT, EdD, Michelle Reilly, DPT, Jennifer Furze, DPT, and Gail Jensen, PT, PhD, all of the the Department of Physical Therapy, developed a clinical reasoning (CR) blueprint as a structure to synthesize evidence on teaching, learning and assessment strategies for CR in health professions education. This CR blueprint intentionally connects evidence-based teaching strategies to specific learning theories to emphasize why an educator might find a specific strategy useful. While it is intended to guide educators in aligning teaching tools with individual learner's needs, the use of a blueprint is not always intuitive. As a result, the research team designed a knowledge translation project to address barriers encountered by educators when utilizing the CR Blueprint and to develop knowledge translation (KT) resources that meet educators' needs.
