Dear Omaha Students and Colleagues,
For so many across our city, Wednesday’s storms caused significant damage and have left hundreds of thousands without power. Thankfully, there have been no reports of major injuries or loss of life due to the destructive winds that passed through; however, it is clear that the recovery for those impacted will be lengthy and taxing.
This storm marks the third such time over nearly as many months that our community has dealt with catastrophic weather and the compounding emotional effects of such events weighs heavy on my heart.
While the immediate effects of the storms are devastating, the lasting memories will be ones of kindness and compassion. I have heard many stories and witnessed such wide-reaching care for others in the form of neighbors clearing fallen limbs, businesses opening their doors to those without power, and outreach to ensure loved ones are safe.
The Creighton community is here for you as well. Students both new and returning, I encourage you to use Student Counseling Services, Campus Ministry, Creighton Intercultural Center, or the Office of Student and Family Support as needed. To our faculty and staff, please do not hesitate to connect with members of the Division of Mission and Ministry or use our Employee Assistance Program.
I want to personally extend my thanks to the many members of our grounds team and Public Safety officers who were immediately on scene after the storm passed and began to clear our campus of significant tree debris. It is because of their hard work and responsiveness that our campus remains accessible and available.
Please continue supporting each other as we navigate the coming days. Just like the rainbow that appeared in the wake of the storm, this darkness will pass as long as we remain focused on the light of the world around us.
God bless,
Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ, PhD
President, Creighton University
