Jay Carney, PhD, professor of theology and African Studies in the Department of Theology, has published a research article with the flagship journal Theological Studies exploring the foundational role of base ecclesial communities in the Congolese Catholic Church.

The article argues that lay-led base communities provide grassroots examples of the type of participatory, dialogical and synodal church called for by the Vatican II and Pope Francis. Carney is grateful to Creighton's Kripke Center for the grant funding that made possible his 2022-23 field research in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
